ALUMNI PROFILES

Dennis L. Hartmann '67

University of Washington Professor of Atmospheric Sciences

After graduating from Regis, Dennis went on the get his undergrad degree from the University of Portland and his PhD from Princeton University. He is now teaching classes, doing research, supervising graduate students, etc. at the University of Washington. His current research includes understanding how clouds affect the energy exchange between Earth and space (including the sun), and how those cloud interactions might affect how sensitive Earth’s climate is to change. Dennis says, "One of the longstanding problems is to predict how clouds will influence how much Earth warms up in response to increasing greenhouse gases." Dennis was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 2016 for his achievements in original research.

Dennis greatly appreciates his Regis education. "Because of the sacrifices of the nuns and priests and donors, I was able to get quite a good high school education, both academic and life/faith knowledge, despite the fact that my dad was a lumberjack and my mom was a cannery worker, and could not have afforded it otherwise."

Dennis and his wife, Lorraine, have been married for 44 years and have two adult children, Alan and Jennifer. They attend Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Seattle, Washington, where Lorraine leads the Justice and Peace Committee and Dennis sings in the choir.
