HIGHLIGHTS

Strategic Plan Update

The Regis Board of Directors and St. Mary Catholic School Advisory Council have voted on and approved a new corporate name for the school system: REGIS ST. MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL. Effective July 1, 2017, Regis St. Mary Catholic School will operate on two campuses, the Regis High School Campus and the St. Mary Catholic School Campus.

The new Regis St. Mary Board of Directors, effective July 1, 2017, has been approved by Archbishop Sample. The new board members are:

Randy Bentz is the Technical Services Manager for Norpac Foods in Stayton. He is a Regis graduate and retired military officer. Randy is a member of Immaculate Conception Church and plays guitar for the church music ministry. He has five children who are or have gone through Catholic education. He is the current Regis Board of Directors Chairman. Steffanie Diacetis is a product support supervisor for Garmin Industries in Salem. She graduated from St. Mary and Regis and has two children, both of whom are in St. Mary. Steffanie is a member of Immaculate Conception Church and has served in various volunteer capacities for the school and parish, most notably chair of the St. Mary Auction for three years. Ryan Frank is the general manager of the Oregon Pallet Company and is a Regis graduate. He has two children in our Catholic schools and is a member of St. Boniface Church. He a current St. Mary School Advisory Council member. Sue Harteloo is a small business owner (Postal Connections). She is an Immaculate Conception Church member and her children went through our Catholic schools some time ago. Karen Hendricks is an inventory auditor for Costco, Inc. in Salem. She has three children in Catholic school and is a St. Mary/Regis graduate. Karen is a member of Immaculate Conception Church and served for multiple years as a St. Mary Parent Club board member. Nick Hennemann is a lawyer and public affairs specialist. Nick has five children, the oldest in St. Mary. Nick is a member of St. Boniface Church is currently on the Regis Board Accreditation Committee. Darcie Hubert is a Marion County probation and parole officer. She has two children at St. Mary and is a St. Mary/Regis graduate. Darcie is an Immaculate Conception Church member and volunteers for the school and various other non-profit organizations. Julie Lulay is an accountant with Norpac Foods and a member of St. Boniface Church. Her children attended our schools as did she. Julie has extensive experience managing budgets. Tyler Lulay (no relation to Julie) is a financial planner with Lulay Financial, LLC and is a St. Mary/Regis graduate. He has three children, the oldest of whom is attending St. Mary. Tyler is an Immaculate Conception Church member. Dr. BC Nelson is a dentist with his own office in Stayton and his son is currently enrolled at St. Mary. BC has been involved with St. Mary for many years (even before having his own son) doing dental presentations to our students. Art Papathanasopoulos is an organic farmer in Jordan. He grew up in South Africa and Greece and went to university in England and Scotland where he earned degrees in Mathematics, Accounting, and an MBA. He and his wife decided about ten years ago to become organic farmers and ended up in our area. Their two children are enrolled in St. Mary and his family attends Our Lady of Lourdes. Anthony Schacher is an electrical engineer and works as the Engineering and Operations Manager for Salem Electric. Three of his four children attend St. Mary. Tony is a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He and his family have a strong commitment to service in the community

New Faces at Regis and St. Mary

for 2017-2018

REGIS HIGH SCHOOL

James Tabor (Regis Class of 1983) Mr. Tabor, brother of current Regis faculty, Rich Tabor, will be the Theology instructor for all grades. Mandy Miotke (Regis Class of 1997) Mrs. Miotke will return to Regis next year (she taught Regis biology in 2013) as the Biology and Chemistry teacher. Tony Miller Mr. Miller, current head boys basketball coach, will also be the new Regis Athletic Director, replacing the retiring Don Heuberger. REGIS AND ST. MARY Megan O'Malley Ms. O'Malley joins Regis and St. Mary as a member of the University of Portland's PACE program and will be teaching freshman and sophomore English and seventh grade Language Arts. Heather Roberts Mrs. Roberts is the new Director of Enrollment for both schools. ST. MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL Jennifer Kroon Ms. Kroon will be teaching one of the two fourth grade classes, along with returning teacher Andrea Kester. Jennifer Upchurch Ms. Upchurch will be teaching the fifth grade class, replacing long time St. Mary teacher Tiffany Tyler, who is moving out of state.

A huge thank you to the committee members, volunteers, sponsors, supporters and attendees of the 2017 St. Mary Auction. The evening was a huge success and will allow us to continue our mission of faith, learning, service and leadership. The total gross income from our annual Evening at the Auction was $129,000. We can't thank you enough!

Regis Junior Encounter

May 28-30, 2017

The focus for the encounter was to deepen our personal relationship with God and to come to know each other better.

Early Friday afternoon we kicked off the junior encounter with a couple of presentations, a trust walk and talks given by the seniors along with sharing in small groups. Friday evening was one of the highlights for our students, as they took time to read their palankas/encouragement letters.

Saturday, we started the day with a couple of games, more talks and building trust as we continued sharing in the small groups. After lunch, we focused more on reconciliation with God, with ourselves and with one another. Saturday evening came to a close as we took the time to lay hands and pray for one another.

Sunday we closed the talk sessions with the chastity talk and then had some fun creating skits within the small groups and performing them in front of the whole group.

For closure tokens were given by the seniors to all the juniors as a memory of this experience.

Well done to all the senior leaders who worked so hard and invested so much of their time for the success of the junior encounter.

"The Junior Encounter was a life changing experience for each and every person that decided to

embark on this journey. Although the weekend was filled with joy, laughter and even tears, we all

bonded as one together in friendship. It was an experience throughout the weekend that brought

everyone closer to each other and to God that made our faith stronger. The time we spent with

each other and in our individual small groups is where we shared our personal stories and bonded

off of what everyone had to say. You could share what was on your mind and no one would

judge what you were talking about. It was definitely a warm, caring environment for everyone

to interact with one another and to actually be comfortable sharing your stories. After the

experience I had myself, I would definitely consider being a senior leader next year to make the

junior girls feel the way I felt during the time I spent at the encounter."

"The experience I had at the encounter is not one that words could do justice. It refreshed me both

in my faith and in my relationship with my classmates, especially those who I rarely talk to.

Everyone maintained a positive attitude the entire time (despite our lack of sleep) and was

always open to what the seniors had planned for us, which allowed the encounter to work the

way it did. Although I loved the talks and the planned activities, some of my favorite parts were

the impromptu activities we engaged in during our free time. I loved the karaoke (which we

slayed) and getting to have very long conversations with my friends during the night. Although it

drained me in every possible way, it also filled and equipped me with new relationships and left

me at a better place in my faith."

"The encounter was an experience that I didn't realize I would value so much. Being able to open

up to my friends in a safe environment was one of the best feelings I've ever endured. The

feeling of unconditional support from all of my classmates was amazing and was something I

didn't realize I had up until then. The exercises that you do on the encounter help you become

vulnerable to yourself and others, while still knowing that you are completely safe and loved by

everyone around you. Getting to know how you really feel after spending so much time bottling

your feelings up and pushing them aside during the school week helps you maintain good mental

and emotional health when you let them all out. Granted that everyone around you is going

through the same emotional journey that you are helps you feel like you aren't alone and that you

have shoulders to cry on. Being in a safe space like the space created at the encounter is a

wonderful place to share all your struggles with people who genuinely care about you and want

to help you heal."

"I’d heard rumors and secretive talk of the encounter before, but the real experience exceeded my

expectations. It accomplished exactly what I hoped it would. It broke down walls, it chipped

away masks, new friendships were formed, and new perspectives took the place of jaded,

comfortable ones. An experience like this is one that you hope can last indefinitely."

May Crowning and Grandparents' Day at St. Mary

St. Mary welcomed Grandparents to campus on Wednesday. May 3, 2017 for the May Crowning Mass, classroom tours, a musical performance and refreshments. Thank you to all of the Grandparents and family members who were able to join us for this special day!

All five participates qualified for the State competition (Intel Northwest Science Expo) held in Hillsboro.

Mimi earned the Broadcom Masters Award for her project "Sweet & Cider", earning her the opportunity to submit her project online to be judged in a National competition.

St. Mary 7th Grader Wins Regional Essay Contest

Mimi Papathanasopoulos, a St. Mary 7th grader, has won Rotary International's Regional "Four Way Test" Essay Contest. She has been invited to read her essay to the Rotarians at their regional conference in Seaside at the end of May.
